I want to teach you how to draw a bat step by step. This tutorial is excellent for people who love Halloween! This lesson will focus more on a silhouette version of a bat. These bats are amazing to fill up a background in a Halloween-themed illustration. You can also use these bats on greeting cards and t-shirt designs! Are you ready to learn how to draw a bat step by step? Let's get those pencils and pens fired up!

Reference

Before we draw anything, let us look up some photo images of bats. These photos will help us be more familiar with these animals. I like to use Pinterest to gather my reference images, and I highly recommend this application. Even though we are drawing a bat silhouette, looking at photos of real bats can help generate inspiration for design and style. I like to turn to Pinterest for this process. Below is a link to my inspiration board for bats. I hope it helps you!

Tools

What you will need for this tutorial is a sheet of paper and pencil and the desire to learn. If you are a digital artist, any detail drawing application will work. However, make sure the app you are using has pressure sensitivity. For this lesson, I am using Procreate on an iPad 7. You can download my brushes here.

Step 1: Bat Body

Loosely sketch an oval for the body and a circle for the head.

I recommend digital users draw in blue. And traditional users use light pencil pressure.

Step 2: Wing Frame

Next, sketch the wings using various arches. Then create a line at the bottom of the body for the tail. Add ears on the top of the circle using triangle shapes. Also, add eyes to your sketch.

Step 3: Connect All Shapes

Connect all your shapes and for the bottom of the bat wings. Use concave arches to create the iconic bat look.

Step 4: Layer Opacity

For digital users, drop your sketch layer to 30%. Pencil and paper users, make sure that your markings are light.

Step 5: Refine Bat Sketch

Next, refine your sketch drawing.

Digital users, create a second layer and place it on top of your sketch layer. Refine your sketch drawing in black.

Step 6: Shade in Bat Shape

The last step is to fill in your bat. We want to keep the shading more of a silhouette. Fill in your bat shape.

Digital artist, create a third layer and place it at the very top of all your layers for the last step.

Below is a diagram of what your layer panel should look like.

If you made it this far, you have completed drawing your bat! And that's how you draw a bat step by step! I hope you learn something from this lesson. Also, feel free to share this tutorial with friends and family!
